Our Movie Review - How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

The wait is finally over. This February, DreamWorks Animation brings to you How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World – a fitting end to the beloved dragon-Viking saga that has had fans worldwide enthralled with its adventures since 2010. This movie is the final act of the trilogy. Based on the book series of the same name by author Cressida Cowell, this action fantasy animated flick promises to be even more exciting than its predecessors, with beautiful 3D animation sequences and a storyline that will tug at your heartstrings.

The indomitable pair of Hiccup and Toothless return amid an ongoing flurry of activity in Berk, where dragons and humans happily reside together. The chief and ruler of Berk now desires to bring order to this happy chaos of Berk being overpopulated by dragons – by finding a ‘Hidden World’ which Stoick told him about, that could be a safe dragon haven for the numerous bustling creatures. But is the ‘Hidden World’ a myth, or does it actually exist somewhere at the edge of the world?

Enter: Grimmel the Grisly, the most sinister of all villains till date in the HTTYD world. The self-proclaimed ‘Night Fury Killer’, Grimmel has his heart and mind set on driving the Night Fury race to extinction. This he can achieve only by capturing Toothless, the last existing Night Fury.

The high point of the movie is the introduction of the playful yet fiercely protective Light Fury, who can blend into the skies and render herself invisible with her mirror-like scales. Toothless and his lady love complement each other beautifully – he’s the dark ‘(k)Night’ in shining armor, and she’s the ‘Light’ to his darkness. Toothless’ endearing dance to impress the Light Fury is undoubtably the highlight of the film – he hops to the left, then hops to the right and makes the most comical expressions ever. Hiccup, hidden in the shrubbery nearby, does his best to encourage a nervous Toothless by putting on a show of dragon dance moves so that Toothless can imitate him, and woo the Light Fury. After all, that’s what best friends are for, aren’t they?

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a complete package: it has action sequences (battles between dragon and Viking pairs against their arch-enemies), goofy comedy (a captured Ruffnut irritating her kidnappers out of their wits till they let her go), bonding (Astrid’s rock-solid support for Hiccup through thick and thin), the importance of teamwork (Vikings and dragons working in tandem) and the willingness to make sacrifices for the sake of friendship, whenever required. Will Hiccup and Toothless bow out with an emotional goodbye and go their separate ways? Maybe that’s what this roller coaster, exquisite journey of our lives is all about – protecting everything you’ve grown to treasure, then letting destiny take its course.
