Prologue

“I’m fine,” Kent said to Dalin as the rain fell upon him. Dalin snorted to say he wasn’t convinced.
Kent sighed, “I will be fine…eventually.” I’m never going back to Berk again.
“We need to land somewhere!” Kent shouted through the rain.

Dalin focused his vision along the horizon. He saw a small island, and grunted to get Kent’s attention.

“I can’t see a thing, go there and we will have to wait out the storm.” He held onto Dalin tighter. His dragon roared and dove toward the small dark island. Kent had no idea that this small island would change his life forever.

They walked along the rocky shore looking for shelter; all they could find was a slight overhang against the cliff. Kent sat down with his dragon next to him.

The Viking got pushed awake. “Ow! What was that for?” Dalin made a low growl.  Once his eyes focused, he noticed that Dalin was alert with his spines out.

“What is it boy?” Kent squinted at the figure coming out of the darkness. “It can’t be…”

As the figure came closer and clearer into view, and Kent heart and mind were racing. He wanted to say that it was impossible, but the proof was slowly crawling towards him. It was a Night Fury.

Chapter One – The Fight

Kent Sorethon sighed deeply and brushed the hair out of his face. I’m definitely not going today! I don’t care about the making of leather!  Kent did his Nadder call to Dalin. Just after, he saw his best friend, a strong Deadly Nadder, black and neon green.  He landed firmly right next to Kent.
“Good morning!” Kent greeted his dragon with a scratch under his chin. “You ready to go explore Dalin?” Dalin gave Kent a look that said you’re missing school… again?

“Don’t give me that look! We are learning about the functions of leather!” Kent exclaimed. He mounted of Dalin and commanded, “To the woods!” Kent enjoyed the ride to the woods. He loved the feeling wind through his black hair. He gazed around the woods, and said, “To our normal spot, ok?” Dalin snorted to reply to his owner.

Kent spent the next 3 hours observing and sketching in his notebook while Dalin dozed off next to him. He was in the middle of drawing a terrible terror when he saw a Zippleback’s shadow… with a rider.

“Uh oh.”

The sleeping Nadder heard this dragon coming and instantly was alert; he made a dragon groan to his Viking. The green Zippleback landed solidly on the ground in front of them.

“Kent!”
“Hey… dad. What are you doing here?”
“Looking for you! You skipped your classes again?!” Samuel Sorethon ranted, “You can’t just skip classes Kent! You need to learn! Your grades are horrible! Your mother and I are very disappointed in you!”
“School isn’t fun dad! I can’t just be there! I need to be out here exploring! That’s what I do best!” Kent argued.

Samuel grabbed his notebook out of Kent’s hands. “All you do is sit out here…“he opened the notebook and saw the drawings, “and doodle!” He looked disgusted at his son, “Do you even want to be successful?!”

Kent tried to explain, “Yes! Yes I do! I just - ”
Samuel interrupted him, “- from what you doing, you don’t. You’re… hopeless!”
Kent glanced at his dragon then at the ground. “Is that…really how you see me?”
“From what I know, yes! You are useless and stupid!”
“Well, then why don’t I just leave if I’m no use to you! Then you won’t have to care!” Kent yelled at his Father.
“At least all our kids would be successful now!”
“Fine!” Kent shouted while holding back tears, “I’ll just leave! There’s no point being here anyways!” He mounted his dragon and took off into the sky.

Chapter 2 - The Discovery

“I’m fine,” Kent said to Dalin as the rain fell upon him.
Dalin snorted to say he wasn’t convinced.
Kent sighed, “I will be fine…eventually.” I’m never going back to Berk again.
“Just keep going,” Kent said to his dragon. Dalin snorted in reply.

They flew for hours through dark thick clouds, and rain started to sprinkle. After three minutes of rain, Dalin growled to get his owner’s attention.

“What is it boy?” Kent questioned.
Dalin growled again in a slightly lighter tone.
“Then what should we do Dalin? There’s no land anywhere!” Every second that passed, the rain got thicker and thicker. Kent was soaking wet, and he was blinded for the water poring upon him.

As the figure came closer and clearer into view, and Kent heart and mind were racing. He wanted to say that it was impossible, but the proof was slowly crawling towards him. It was a Night Fury.

Kent gasped. “Night fury….”

The dark dragon did a low angry growl. Kent had always imagined that all Night Fury’s were all black. He was definitely wrong. This Night Fury had neon green markings on him, sort of the color of Dalin, his Nadder.

Dalin stepped in front of Kent and let out a deep warning growl.
“No!” Kent said to quiet his dragon, “maybe he will let us be friends.”
The angry dragon stared into Kent’s eyes and growled loudly.
