Next Generation Science Standards

Science teaching in classrooms across the country has changed dramatically beginning this fall with the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) that will transform the teaching and learning of science in America.

About Next Generation Science Standards

NGSS is the new K-12 science standards developed by a collaborative multi-states effort including multiple teams of writers and partners. The Next Generation Science Standards are composed of three core dimensions from the K-12 NRC(National Research Council) Science Framework.

NGSS is a set of voluntary guidelines that seek to improve students’ performance in the STEM (science-technology-engineering-mathematics) disciplines. Unlike the Common Core Standards (which covers English and math), NGSS only deals with science.

The new science standards ensure that students learn to think like and work scientists and researchers and master important science skills by asking and answering questions through scientific methods. The aim of the NGSS is to help students appreciate the importance of science in our lives.

These updated science standards were developed by 26 states in tandem with scientists, educationists and organizations involved in children’s education. So far, seven states have implemented them, while several others are debating the adoption of the NGSS.
